Process for Design Registration

At Hellaw IP, we make design registration simple, efficient, and fully compliant with the law. A registered design protects the unique visual appearance of your product — including shape, pattern, configuration, and ornamentation — ensuring no one can copy or misuse it.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Consultation & Eligibility Check

We begin by understanding your design and business goals. Our experts assess whether your design meets the legal requirements under the Designs Act, 2000 — ensuring originality and distinctiveness.

2. Document Preparation

We guide you in preparing all required documents, including:

  • Drawings, photographs, or images of the design from multiple views

  • Statement of novelty

  • Power of Attorney (if applicable)

  • Applicant details (individual, company, or partnership)

3. Filing the Application

Our team drafts and files your design application with the Indian Patent Office in the appropriate class based on the product category. Accurate classification is crucial for strong protection.

4. Examination by the Design Office

The Design Office examines the application to verify compliance and originality. If objections arise, we respond with expert legal replies and necessary amendments.

5. Registration & Certificate Issuance

Once approved, your design is registered and published in the Design Journal. You’ll receive an official Design Registration Certificate granting you exclusive rights for 10 years (renewable for another 5 years).

6. Post-Registration Support

We offer ongoing monitoring, renewal reminders, and enforcement assistance to safeguard your rights throughout the registration term.
